John Sorensen was born in Denmark and moved to Manchester in 1932. He originally started a business selling bakery equipment, but over the next few years began to take pride in his own baking ability. He made all kinds of cakes, but it was his home- made malt cake that proved his biggest hit – locals would queue all day outside his bakery to buy some.

Although Sorensen sold his business in 1938, his legacy lived on through the company’s trading name: Soreen, which is still the UK’s best- selling malt-loaf brand, with 9,960 Soreen loaves produced an hour.
